Coaches

John Hayden
Head Coach

In 2001 Coach Hayden founded the Apex Lacrosse club to create more opportunities for students from the area to participate in athletics. The following year (2002) the team played its first Varsity season.

In 2003, Apex made the playoffs for the first time. Apex has appeared in 9 final fours and 6 State Championship games, winning titles in 2005, 2013 and 2015.

To date, 12 Apex players have earned All America honors and 54 have been selected All State.

Coach Hayden is an alumnus of Farmingdale HS on Long Island where his 1983 team won the Nassau County Championship and Hayden earned All Nassau County Honors as a Defenseman. Hayden also played Division I Lacrosse at Rutgers University and participated in the NCAA playoffs two times while playing "On the Banks".

Coach Hayden was inducted into the North Carolina Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2018. Coach Hayden has been the Dean of Student Services at Apex High School.

Mike Daum
Assistant Coach

Coach Daum is a 2014 graduate of Apex HS where he starred in both Lacrosse and Football.

Mike was a two-time Captain of the Lacrosse team and a Captain of Football as well. Mike played in two State Championships for Cougars Lacrosse in (’13, ’14) getting the win in 2013.

 

Since high school, Mike has been serving in the US Army where he served deployments to the Middle East and Afghanistan with US Army Special Operations units. He is looking forward to the next chapter of his life as a civilian.

Jake Fegley
Assistant Coach
Jon Nicholas
Assistant Varsity Coach

A 2016 transplant from Bethlehem, PA, Coach Nicholas was involved with several youth and high school programs. In 2009 he became the Lacrosse Coordinator for Bethlehem Township Athletic Association overseeing and coaching U7-U15 boys and girls teams.

In 2013 he became an assistant coach with Freedom High School focusing on defense and face off coaching. In 2014 he became the President of the Lehigh Valley Youth Lacrosse League. Coach Nicholas has also been involved with many Travel programs including Dukes Lacrosse, Lehigh Valley Lightning and box teams as well.

He joined Apex HS in the summer of 2017 coaching the defense and face off training. He is also the Site Director for Rival Lacrosse Cary, Assistant Coach Team 91 Carolina 2022 and Head Coach Team 91 Carolina Box High School team. He resides in Apex with wife Jennifer sons Nathan and Connor. 

Bryce Sneed
Head JV Coach

Bryce is a 2010 Apex graduate. He will serve as Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity while spending a lot of time with all the faceoff guys in the program.

 

Bryce played Football and Lacrosse at AHS. He was a two-time captain for the Lacrosse team and Captain of the Football team. Bryce played in two State Championship Lacrosse games in (’08 ’10). Coach Sneed played in college at Wingate University.

 

He served as Captain his Senior year and was ranked 3rd in GB's per game average and 5th in FO percentage in DII. In 2015 Coach Sneed was an Assistant Coach for the Cougars epic State Championship run.

 

That same year, he had a brief stint with the Charlotte Hounds. In 2016, Coach Sneed was hired as a Graduate Assistant for the North Greenville University Men's Lacrosse program.

 

During his two years there, he led their face-off group to a 60% average and coached their lead man to All-Conference Honors both years.

 

Bryce is currently teaching at Apex and will be married in the Fall. 

Coach Fegley is a 2012 graduate of Apex HS and served as Lacrosse Captain that year. Jake also played football at Apex.

 

As a sophomore Jake played in the 2010 Lacrosse State Championship alongside Coach Sneed. Jake is in his second year assisting with the JV team while also helping with Varsity.

 

After a brief sting playing College Lacrosse at Wingate (also with Sneed), he wound up graduating from Appalachian State University.

 

Jake works in Research Triangle Park and is looking forward to getting married in the Fall.
 

Gene Vigue
Assistant Coach

Gene Vigue has been a volunteer assistant with Apex Lacrosse since 2011.

He has had two sons go through the program (Kyle 2016) and Zach (2020).

 

Coach Vigue has brought valuable experience from years as being a youth football and lacrosse coach in the Apex area.
